Work Life Balance

Background

This information is about the specific health area mentioned above. It comprises a combination of textual and video information, on our site and on external sites.  We will be adding new specific health areas and further information continually.

The idea is for you to understand more about the health area you are addressing before you get too far building your action plan.

General Information

Work-life balance: WOW, what an unassuming phrase – but it’s one of the most fundamental things in your life. We all strive for work-life balance but never seem to achieve it. 67% of workers hate their current role and would prefer to have a different job. Retirement age is now 67 and will rise to 70 so it is vitally important that if we are going to go out to do an 8 hour day 5 days a week we need to be happy to do it, don’t we!!

Work-life balance is often not that simple; if you are a senior person your company usually pays well but want there pound (or kilo!) of flesh.  Many are in pointless jobs with no career prospects and want to come in and go home as fast as possible. The sad part is it’s going to be 50 years of the same work!!  It may be worthwhile looking at a job that better suits your personality – look at PersonalityDrive.

People from all walks and pay grades often wish they could do something else and dream of doing something they enjoy, earning a living from a passion or hobby. To be able to do that requires a person to plan from very early on that their happy job will kick in when they are 50 or 55 say.

To build your own business can be very hard and stressful but if you run it along side your existing paid role for a few years and gradually build up you can make a plan to semi-retire and do the work you want.

Work-life balance is so important from another point of view -your family. Your children are only young once and you cannot turn the clock back, so take a step back and remember we are only here once.

Work-life balance is within our own capability if we want it to be. Everyone at some stage in a week, month, year or decade has to work longer and harder to get things done, but it is truly a false economy to maintain high work outputs over a long period.

Life Journey

When we reach adulthood we have to take on responsibilities – one of these is often having to earn money to support your family.  This can include working – sometimes this is fulfilling, often it isn’t – it’s something we have to do to provide.

Not many people are lucky enough to work somewhere they enjoy – but a lot of it is about attitude.

“Don’t count the days – make the days count.” – Muhammad Ali

This section discusses changing from an adolescent to an adult. [Transitioning]

Then there’s preparing for the next stage of life. [Life begins at forty]

Finally something you must consider [Making a will]

FamilyDrive

Everyone defines their family differently; some people have very close, big extended families, where everyone works together, and others have close tight knit families.  Some people are virtually alone.

Here we’re defining ‘family’ as the group of people we care most about.  Typically it’s parents and children, but as we said it varies.

In a way children are the most important, as they have no choice but to be dependent on someone, normally their parents.  We want to look after them, make sure they’re healthy and happy, and provide for their future.

FamilyDrive looks at different events that can happen to a family, and how you can be helped and supported during and after these events, and how in some cases you can plan for some of them..

In this fast paced life it’s not easy for anyone to manage, grow and maintain a healthy family, and FamilyDrive provides a helping hand. Financial family wellness is really important because it affects the whole family not just the individual. Once we are on the journey it is so important to stop for a moment and think about protecting each stage of growth or development in your family situation. Also to think about the consequences if you were not there to guide the way forward.

Maintaining a work/life balance is easy when you’re a sole trader, right? You typically work from home and you have no one else to answer to, so it should be easy to switch off.

Unfortunately, that’s not always the case. In fact, many home-based sole traders struggle to strike a healthy work/life balance because the lines are more blurred.

Ella Legg, founder of copywriting consultancy Ella Smith Communications, knows how difficult it can be to strike that balance, having experienced it firsthand.

Here are her top 20 tips for achieving and maintaining a healthy work/life balance.
