General Information

Brain power!

What is your brain?

Planet Science says: “Inside your head is a jelly-like organ that controls everything you do. Without it, you wouldn’t be able to think, run, dance or even breathe. But what makes your brain so special?

Your brain is like a powerful computer. It stores memories and controls how you move, breathe, think and react. Compared to other mammals about the same size as you, you have a big brain.

Your brain has lots of folds and wrinkles. The wrinkles increase the area of your brain, making lots of space for you to make connections between brain cells. More connections equal more brain power!

Here are our top five brain facts:

  • When you’re awake, your brain generates enough electricity to power a lightbulb.
  • You have the same number of brain cells at birth as you do in adulthood. As you learn and store memories, these brain cells grow and you make new connections between them.
  • Your brain makes up 2% of your body’s weight, but uses 20% of your body’s energy.
  • The left side of your brain controls the right side of your body. The right side of your brain controls the left side of your body.
  • James Watson, a famous scientist, once said the brain is “the most complex thing we have yet discovered in our universe.”

Top Universities have an article on 5 effective ways to boost your brain power, and these are:

  • Chess – this ancient game is able to boost your brain power, with huge benefits for memory and strategic vision
  • “Train Your Brain: 60 Days to a Better Brain” – a book by Japanese neuroscientist Kawashima Ruta. The book’s challenges include solving simple mathematical calculations such as “14-7” or “7×9”, memorizing words, and counting numbers from 1 to 120 aloud – BUT, all of these exercises must be done against the clock. This is a key idea of the whole book: do the brain-training exercises as fast as possible, as a time deficit runs some high-intensity processes in the brain.
  • Reading  – smart people have spent years or decades to collect information, interpret and share it in the pages of books.
  • Learning foreign languages – you don’t need unique talents for languages – you need languages to develop these “not-so-unique” talents.
  • Rest – sometimes, my brain needs a rest.

Harness your brain

This is a 14 minute TEDx talk by Dr Lara Boyd.  It provides some great insights on your brain, and actually changes some things we thought about how the brain works.  The text below is from the video.
“In a classic research-based TEDx Talk, Dr. Lara Boyd describes how neuroplasticity gives you the power to shape the brain you want. Our knowledge of the brain is evolving at a breathtaking pace, and Dr. Lara Boyd is positioned at the cutting edge of these discoveries. In 2006, she was recruited by the University of British Columbia to become the Canada Research Chair in Neurobiology and Motor Learning. Since that time she has established the Brain Behaviour Lab, recruited and trained over 40 graduate students, published more than 80 papers and been awarded over $5 million in funding. Dr. Boyd’s efforts are leading to the development of novel, and more effective, therapeutics for individuals with brain damage, but they are also shedding light on broader applications. By learning new concepts, taking advantage of opportunities, and participating in new activities, you are physically changing who you are, and opening up a world of endless possibility. “
